The umbrella organisation, Northern Ireland Environment Link, has spoken out against the consultation on the environmental laws, with a decision being taken next year on any possible changes.
Anna Lo MLA said: “I am giving my support to the campaign against the proposed review of these European environmental laws.
“Northern Ireland’s natural environment is one of our main assets and I would be seriously concerned by the implications of any change to the birds and habitats directives which could lead to a drastic weakening of vital environmental rules.
“I would fear that if these laws were to be reviewed that key environmental areas would no longer be given the same level of protection.
“These laws have been vital in protecting our bio-diversity and I would hope that they aren’t undermined or diminished.”
