Lo puts NI Water under spotlight at Stormont Committee today

At today’s special Stormont Regional Development Committee meeting, Alliance Regional Development Spokesperson Anna Lo MLA quizzed NI Water officials about why it appeared that public housing areas, like Taughmonagh, Belvoir and Tullycarnet had their water supply turned off more quickly than privately-owned housing in those wider area. She also asked them about how they plan to improve their communications strategy given its failure during the crisis.

Anna Lo MLA said: “This whole saga has brought shame on Northern Ireland . The public are demanding answers on how no-one foresaw this crisis and many serious issues still need to be addressed. Today’s thorough and searching session with NI Water at the Stormont Committee was merely the tip of the iceberg, and NI Water must prove that it is fit for purpose.

“I quizzed officials on communication practices and on why it appeared that public housing areas, like Taughmonagh, Belvoir and Tullycarnet had their water supply turned off more quickly than privately-owned housing in those wider areas.

“This has been the single most shameful period in the history of any utility in Northern Ireland . More bad weather appears to be on the way in the coming days and there must never be a repeat of this. Massive lessons need to be learned and adequate emergency planning and communications strategies must be put in place immediately.”
