Lo disappointed by collapse of offshore wind farm project

Alliance Environment spokesperson, Anna Lo MLA, has expressed her disappointment after it was announced that a major offshore wind farm project has been scrapped. The £1billion project would have seen 100 wind turbines being placed five miles off the shore of County Down by First Flight Wind. Due to delays, the project will not be completed by 2021, which was required under new market rules.

Anna Lo MLA said: “I am very disappointed that this project will not be going ahead. This wind farm had the potential to provide about 13% of our energy needs and provide jobs in the area.

“We must do all that is possible to increase the level of renewable energy that we produce in Northern Ireland. This would help reduce fuel costs and improve our fuel security.

“I would call on the Enterprise Minister to work with her Westminster counterparts in the Department of Energy and Climate Change to provide some certainty in relation to incentives for the promotion of renewable energy.”
