Mr Dickson was speaking as the ban came into effect across the UK. Such substances have caused the death of several locals over the past few years. Those who produce, distribute, sell and supply them will now face up to seven years in prison under the Psychoactive Substances Act.
“I have been deeply concerned by the availability of these dangerous substances and have worked alongside colleagues to prevent their sale,” said Mr Dickson.
“Many lives have been wrecked and indeed, some have even been ended due to these so-called legal highs.
“Former Justice Minister David Ford deserves praise for putting pressure on the Home Office to bring forward the legislation that led to this ban. It will undoubtedly save lives.”
