Jones condemns East Belfast race crime

Alliance East Belfast Councillor Mervyn Jones has condemned the threats made against a family which the police are treating as a race crime. The threats were made when their 8 year old son got into a fight with another boy which resulted in neighbours racially abusing the boy’s father. The family left their home for a hostel and subsequently have been given temporary accommodation by the Housing Executive.

Cllr Mervyn Jones said: “No person should be threatened in their own street and especially not in a racist manner.

“After last months racist attacks on the Romanian families in South Belfast, I had hoped that we would not see any more racially motivated crimes in Northern Ireland. The Northern Ireland Executive must continue to promote good relations and to stamp out racism.

“We must all work together to ensure that Northern Ireland is as welcoming as possible for everybody.”
