Hendron condemns ‘appalling’ attack on Belfast Lord Mayor

Alliance Belfast City Council Group Leader Maire Hendron has condemned what she called an appalling attack on Belfast Lord Mayor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir and nine police officers.

Councillor Hendron was speaking after Mr Ó Muilleoir was jostled and heckled as he attempted to attend the re-opening of a park in North Belfast. Nine police officers were injured protecting him during the incident.

Councillor Maire Hendron said: “This was a despicable act by those attending today’s protest in North Belfast. The Lord Mayor was carrying out his civic role, a role in which he represents everybody across Belfast. It is completely unacceptable that he would come under attack for this.

“I completely condemn what happened today and am further disappointed that not all political representatives have been able to unite with me in condemning the incident.

“The World Police and Fire Games are currently underway in Belfast and the City is buzzing with athletes and spectators. Today’s scenes are certainly not what we want our many visitors to witness.”
