Hendron calls for calm ahead of Belfast City Centre parade

Alliance Belfast Council Group Leader Maire Hendron has called for calm ahead of a parade and protest that is due to take place in Belfast City Centre on Sunday. There were violent scenes at last year’s parade which resulted in 56 police officers being injured.

Cllr Maire Hendron said: “Nobody wants to see a repeat of the violent scenes that took place at the same parade last year. Our city centre businesses do not need the disruption and potential damage to the Belfast economy.

“It was disgraceful that so many Police officers were injured at the last year’s parade. There can be no justification for any attack on the PSNI.

“Anybody who is wishing to take part in violence should stay away from the parade and protest. There is no reason why this event cannot pass off peacefully.

“The Parades Commission has made a ruling in relation to this event. It is vital that all sides abide by the determinations of the lawful parading body, anybody who breaks these rulings is breaking the law.”
