Cochrane disgusted by racist abuse of Michael Abiona

Alliance East Belfast MLA, Judith Cochrane, has condemned the racist abuse that was shouted at Michael Abiona and his friend Adebayo Shodiya on Monday night. A woman got out of a taxi outside his home and shouted racist abuse at them and told them to get out of the area.

In June, racist banners saying ‘local homes for local people’ were placed at the Housing Executive property he was due to move into, forcing him to find alternative accommodation.

Judith Cochrane MLA said: “I am disgusted that racist abuse has been shouted at Michael and his friend, just weeks after racist banners were placed at a house he was due to move into on Glenluce Drive. There can be no reason to intimidate any individual or force them to leave their own home.

“I would like to offer my support to Michael and his friend after this appalling incident. The woman who carried out this abuse should be ashamed of herself. She does not represent the views of the vast majority of people in East Belfast who would be sickened at the use of such language.

“After a long delay, the First and deputy First Ministers have finally published the draft Racial Equality Strategy. It is important that this document is fully implemented and given the resources it requires to promote integration, protect ethnic minorities and stamp out racism.”
