Government needs to reduce UK’s net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2030, says Blair

The Government needs to reduce the UK’s net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2030, while embedding climate action at the heart of Government planning and delivery, Alliance South Antrim Westminster candidate John Blair has said.

Mr Blair said while the while the climate crisis was well established, not enough was being done to lessen the impact.

“There is no doubt the world is facing a climate emergency, with potentially disastrous consequences for everyone around the globe. Those consequences are already being experienced by some of the most vulnerable people in the world, as well as various species. It is vital all nations work together to urgently reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the impact of climate change.

“The UK Government has a role to play – it needs to take swift action to help mitigate the impact climate change is having. Reducing the UK’s net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2030 is a realistic goal, however, more needs done to embed environmentalism at the heart of all Government planning and delivery.

“In Westminster, Alliance will seek to do our part – we will support a global climate change fund to ensure poorer countries can mitigate the impact of climate change, seek the formation of a Department for Climate and Natural Resources and support the establishment of citizens’ climate assemblies to engage the public in tackling the climate emergency.

“This is the biggest crisis we have ever faced. It is literally about survival of the planet. Unless we all come together to combat it, we will continue to see the disastrous effects.”
