Ford reveals river pollution prosecution figures

Alliance Leader David Ford has revealed that of the 22 high severity river pollution cases in 2007, only eight of the incidents are currently being processed by the Public Prosecution Service. The figures came in an answer from Minister Sammy Wilson to a question on the issue from Mr Ford.

David Ford said: “The number of cases currently being processed by the PPS appears quite low. Ideally we would like to see prosecutions secured against all those who are guilty of polluting our rivers.

“Some other incidents are still under active investigation by the Environment Agency and I would hope that cases can if possible be taken on these.

“The strongest possible message must be sent out by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency to deter anyone who might pollute our rivers from doing so.”
