Ford comments on the death of Drummer Lee Rigby

Alliance Leader David Ford has passed on his sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of Drummer Lee Rigby who was murdered last Wednesday in Woolwich. Mr Ford paid tribute to Mr Rigby, during a matter of the day in the Northern Ireland Assembly.

David Ford MLA said: “On behalf of my Party colleagues I want to extend my sympathy to the family and friends of Drummer Lee Rigby. We also think of his colleagues, those serving in the Armed Forces across the UK and abroad.

“As a resident of Antrim and a representative for South Antrim I was struck by the similarity of his murder on the streets of Woolwich with the terrible events at Massereene Barracks four years ago.

“Drummer Lee Rigby survived a tour of duty in Afghanistan, only to be murdered in such brutal fashion on the streets of London.

“This was an act of terror, designed to draw fear into the hearts of everyone across the UK. However, this act will not have the desired effect, which is clearly seen by the unity not only in the Assembly, but across the UK.

“It is disappointing that a small number have reacted in an inappropriate way.

“We stand together united in opposition to the terror that took the life of Drummer Lee Rigby. We stand together in solidarity and support and we must stand together in opposition to those who seek division.”
