The local Councillor was speaking after one and a half kilograms of what was believed to be Semtex plastic explosive was found in a block of flats in the New Lodge area.
Councillor Nuala McAllister said: “It is very disappointing that there are still people in our society actively working to disrupt the progress Northern Ireland has made.
“This discovery is extremely worrying. I’m relieved the authorities acted quickly and the explosives where swiftly removed and the area was made safe.
“These explosives had the potential to cause serious carnage among our community and I would urge anyone with information to contact the PSNI as soon as possible.”
