Cllr Brian Dornan said: “Having a plastic bag levy here would help encourage people to reuse bags. This would greatly assist in cutting down on litter and would have a positive impact in relation to environmental protection.
“Some of the money raised by a levy could potentially be put into funding environmental projects and this is important to ensure further resources are available for this important sector.
“We have real potential in relation to our green economy and a measure like this which could boost our environmental credentials would be very welcome.
“It is vital that we ensure we find the best way to implement this levy as this is key to the successful operation of such an initiative.”
