Dickson welcomes broadband provision to constituency

Alliance East Antrim MLA Stewart Dickson has welcomed the extension of Virgin Broadband provision to areas in his constituency.

Hedgelea Road in Newtownabbey has just received the service, with Greenisland and Carrickfergus soon to follow. Mr Dickson said he had been pressing for the broadband to be introduced there for some time.

“I have been attempting to resolve BT Broadband issues in the Greenisland area for several residents. This let me to also engage with Virgin Media, who are actively looking at providing broadband in Greenisland and Carrickfergus.

“I have been pressing for greater provision for East Antrim for a considerable time. While I am pleased at the arrival of Virgin Broadband, it is necessary due to the failures of BT to deliver high quality broadband provision from their Whiteabbey exchange.

“Virgin will bring much needed broadband, but will also provide invaluable competition. BT have enjoyed a monopoly for far too long. This has resulted in poor internet services in East Antrim, and poor services across Northern Ireland. I am hopeful this move will see the necessary change.”
