Dickson sadness at road deaths rise in 2009

Chair of Carrickfergus District Policing Partnership, Cllr Stewart Dickson has expressed deep sadness that the number of road death in 2009 has increased on the figure for 2008. 115 people died in 2009 and 107 died in 2008. Stewart Dickson said that radical new ways of improving road safety must be examined.

Alliance Party Councillor Stewart Dickson said: “These are deeply depressing statistics. Road accidents cause untold carnage and tear so many families apart. Any sensible measure that could reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on our roads simply has to be examined.

“Before Christmas I suggested that speed limits in accident hotspots should be reduced, and I would call on such a scheme to be piloted here. We need to look at radical and innovative ways of increasing road safety.”
