Council backs Alliance plans to recognise football achievements

Belfast City Council has backed Alliance proposals to recognise the achievements of both the Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland football teams.

Over the past few weeks people across Northern Ireland have been captivated by the journey of both teams as they reached the last 16 of the 2016 European Championships.

At the latest meeting Councillor Mervyn Jones called on the Council to write and express its admiration to both football associations on behalf of all the citizens of Belfast.

He said: “Having been in France during the tournament, it was fantastic for fans young and old to see both teams progress throughout the competition – they really did us proud on the pitch.

“The packed fanzones here in Belfast are another testament to the pride people felt at home, with both teams inspiring the next generation with their hard work and dedication.

“Sport plays a key role in uniting out community and never was this clearer than through the behavior of both sets of fans during the tournament, with their contribution to the overall atmosphere held in such high esteem they have since been awarded Medal of City of Paris.”
