Cochrane: Survey shows people are more interested in economy than tribal politics

Alliance Finance spokesperson, Judith Cochrane MLA, has said the results of a NICVA survey into voter attitudes have shown that people are more interested in the economy than tribal politics. The survey revealed that 68% of respondents felt that economic issues were important when it came to casting their vote, compared to 56% for constitutional issues. Alliance was also the second most trustworthy party on economic issues with 31% viewing the party favourably.

Judith Cochrane MLA said: “This survey has shown that voters place a greater emphasis on the economy than tribal politics.

“Parties must go into the elections with a positive message of how we can improve people’s lives rather than playing the orange and green cards. Parties should not attempt to play on the public’s fears but should instead say how we can make Northern Ireland better.

“I would also like to welcome the results of the survey in which Alliance was seen as the second most trustworthy party on economic matters. We have put forward sound economic policies that would result in a positive change for our economy and society. If enough people step forward and support Alliance, then we can make more of a difference.”
