Cochrane concern at freeze to elements of tax credits

Alliance Finance Spokesperson Judith Cochrane MLA has expressed concern about the Chancellor’s announcement in the Autumn Statement to freeze elements of tax credits, saying this could have an impact on child poverty.

Judith Cochrane MLA said: “I am concerned that, apart from the child element of Child Tax Credit, the government is freezing tax credits. Tax credits are vital to ensuring that lone parents are better off in work than on benefit. Cuts such as these will mean that work incentives for this group are weakened.”

“This is a troubling move and I hope that the Chancellor will reconsider this decision.”
