At a presentation of Awards Ceremony held at Newcastle Coastguard Station on Wednesday 29th August the prestigious award which has never been won in Northern Ireland was awarded to the two Officers from South Down Coastguard Team. The Chief Coastguard, Peter Diamond from Southampton HQ made the presentation to the Officers and in attendance were other senior Coastguard Officers and representatives from other services.
Councillor Patrick Clarke, who attended the presentation, said: “I would like to warmly congratulate Coastguard Officers, Keith Campbell and John Kirkpatrick who showed exemplary bravery in carrying out their duties last year saving the lives of adults and children at separate incidents at Dundrum Inner Bay last year.
“Had it not been for their professionalism and quick thinking, there could have been fatalities at Dundrum Inner Bay.
“To receive the award is a fantastic accolade not only for the worthy recipients but for the entire South Down Coastguard team who volunteer their time and expertise in rescues on both sea and land.
“South Down Coastguard team provide an important voluntary 24-hour maritime and rescue service and it is very fitting that officers Keith Campbell and John Kirkpatrick have been recognised by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency for their heroic rescues.
