The local councillor was speaking after police revealed there have been 12 cases of laser pens being pointed at aircraft in the Newtownabbey area in the last three weeks.
Councillor Tom Campbell said: “I was shocked to hear of aircraft being targeted in this way in Newtownabbey. Everyone must be aware of the dangers behind this action.
“This is a very dangerous and serious offence. Not only can it distract the pilot and cause temporary blindness, shining laser pens at aircraft endangers the lives of all on board and causes unnecessary delays.
“Those behind this must be stopped before serious harm is done. I would urge anyone who is aware of the culprits to come forward and speak to the police. This type of behaviour cannot be allowed to continue in Newtownabbey.”
