Bradshaw says catastrophic situation developing in health sector

Alliance Health spokesperson Paula Bradshaw MLA has said a “catastrophic situation is developing” in the health sector after another GP surgery announced it would be closing its doors.

The Tullycarnet branch of Bridges Family Practice will close its doors at the end of next month. Doctors there applied to close it due to concerns the mobile surgery was not up to standard. It is the latest in a list of surgeries across Northern Ireland to do similar recently.

“As a member of the Health Committee in the previous Assembly, I am fully aware the DUP and Sinn Fein were briefed continuously over the past few mandates about the deepening crisis in the GP sector.

“They have been warned of the stark reality of failing to reform the health and social care sector, and yet they continue to put other matters of self-interests for their political parties before the health and well-being needs of the people of Northern Ireland.

“This impending situation with the Tullycarnet branch of Bridges Family Practice is now part of a catastrophic situation developing and I would urge the DUP, Sinn Fein and any other political party standing in the way of reaching a deal at Stormont to reflect on the health needs of the people who are so reliant on a functioning Executive to deliver an effective service.”
