Assembly backs Alliance amendment on use of social media in Councils

The Assembly has backed an Alliance amendment to the Local Government Bill that will permit the use of social media during Council meetings by Councillors, the public or journalists, as long it doesn’t disrupt proceedings.

Alliance Environment spokesperson, Anna Lo MLA, said “I am delighted that the Assembly has backed the Alliance Party amendment to allow Councillors, the public and journalists to use social media during Council meetings.

“Social media is growing in influence and is a useful way to communicate directly with the public. This amendment reflects the changes in how people engage with their politicians.

“It is also important for journalists to be allowed to use social media as a means of reporting Council meetings. I am very pleased to have proposed this amendment that will further improve the freedom of the press at the new Councils. This amendment will increase the openness and transparency of Council business.”
