The local Councillor was speaking after 3M – which manufactures masking tapes – confirmed 34 jobs were set to be impacted as the company is relocating work to Italy.
Councillor Stuart Anderson said: “This is devastating news and my immediate thoughts are for the workers of 3M and their families. These jobs losses are extremely regrettable, and the effects will be felt throughout the area.
“The company’s decision is a severe blow to Bangor’s economy. These jobs will be difficult to replace in the long-term, as more and more opportunities are being lost locally as companies relocate services elsewhere.
“I have already been in touch with Employment and Learning Minister Stephen Farry to explore what assistance his department can provide, regarding redundancy advice to the workers and to explore options for retraining.
“Bangor remains a great location, with fantastic potential for global companies. We must do all we can to continue attracting new employment opportunities to the area.”
