Alliance welcomes school build funding but says other schools are also in need

Alliance Education Spokesperson Trevor Lunn has welcomed Education Minister Caitríona Ruane’s announcement of funding for school building projects and for maintenance work at existing sites but criticised the build funding selection process. He also said that if the Minister was more radical on the rationalisation of the schools’ estate more money could be released for other schools which require funding urgently for building projects.

Trevor Lunn MLA said: “I am pleased that the Minister has been able to announce additional funding for school building projects and for maintenance work but the process for the selection of schools for building funding has been very confusing and frustrating. I recognise that times are tight but many other schools also really need and deserve funding for building projects.

“The Minister needs to be more radical on the rationalisation of the schools’ estate so that more cash can be released for other schools which need funding.

“While this news is welcome there are still a number of schools which are still awaiting the green light for their schemes and every effort must be made to provide funding for them too. Investing in schools is about investing in our future and we must strive to provide the best possible facilities within our education system.”
