Alliance supports cut to special allowances

Alliance Belfast City Councillors have supported calls for a 10 percent cut to special responsibility allowances when the new shadow Council comes into effect from April 1.

At a time when many across Northern Ireland continue to struggle with on-going austerity measures, Alliance was the largest group to support the measure that currently qualifies for special responsibility allowances.

Councillor Michael Long said: “As ratepayers continue to face an uncertain future due to many budget cuts that are yet to be implemented, it is only right that their elected representatives stand alongside them and do not shy away from their responsibilities.

“A cut of 10 percent would have allowed the additional money to be re-directed into frontline services, with the sole outcome benefitting ratepayers across the borough.

“It is disappointing that Alliance was the largest affected Party qualifying for special responsibility allowances to take this view, with the DUP, UUP, SDLP and Sinn Fein all opting to line their own pockets further rather than putting the needs of constituents first.”
