Alliance says sustainable strategy needed to safeguard Ballymac Playzone

East Belfast Alliance MLA Chris Lyttle has said it is essential that a long-term strategy is put in place by the relevant government departments to ensure that Ballymac Playzone scheme on the Lower Newtownards Road can continue to operate.

Chris Lyttle MLA said: “The project provides an important childcare resource for people in the area and it would be a tragedy if this scheme were to be lost. It’s essential that a sustainable and integrated childcare strategy is put in place by OFMdFM and the Executive to ensure that this project can continue.

“We need to see a long-term approach adopted as soon as possible and I call on the relevant departments to help deliver this. This is a deeply worrying situation and those who rely on and are involved with this scheme need clarity on what is going to happen.

“I requested a meeting with the relevant ministers and officials on behalf of all those campaigning on this issue to discuss funding fears and I have yet to receive a response, so I can understand the frustrations of parents and staff.”

Alliance Councillor Máire Hendron said: “This is an extremely valued scheme and we need to see a sustainable approach put in place so that this good work carried out can continue into the future. People are deeply worried about this and if the project were lost it would be devastating for the community.”
