Alliance say sectarian campaign must stop

Alliance MLA Kieran McCarthy and Councillor Linda Cleland have said a sectarian campaign against a Newtownards woman and her children must stop.

The pair were speaking after Janette Nelson (38) and her three children escaped their home in the Lenamore Park area through an upstairs window, after it was set on fire.

The latest in a number of sectarian attacks against the family, it is believed the fire was started by something being put through their letterbox and then set alight.

Councillor Linda Cleland said: “I am absolutely disgusted that Ms Nelson and her three children have been targeted again. Whoever started this fire should be ashamed of their actions.

“Continued campaigns of this nature will not be tolerated in Newtownards and I would urge anyone with information to contact the police as soon as possible.

“The Alliance Party is working to eradicate all forms of discrimination, creating a shared future for all. As a Councillor I will be working hard to ensure this is achieved for Newtownards.”

MLA for Strangford Kieran McCarthy expressed his outrage at the attack.

He said: “I am disgusted that somebody would put the lives of this family at risk. My thoughts and support go out to this family after such a traumatic experience.

“I would like to praise the actions of the police and neighbours who put themselves at risk to help rescue the family.

“If anybody has any information about this arson attack then I would urge them to contact the police.”
