Alliance responds to hard-hitting report on Loughinisland Murders

Alliance Policing Spokesperson, Stephen Farry, has responded to the Police Ombudsman Report in into the Murders at the Heights Bar in Loughinisland in June 1994.

Stephen Farry said: “This report from the Police Ombudsman is robust and hard-hitting. It identifies massive failings in terms of policing at the time. I do welcome that the Chief Constable has recognised the conclusion of collusion and provided an unequivocal apology.

“Alliance pays tribute to the tenacity to the victims and survivors of the Loughinisland massacre in their pursuit for justice.

“While the immense challenges of policing in the context of terrorist violence have to be recognised, this report sets out how an extremely troubling account as flaws in intelligence handling and investigations, and a warped sense of policing priorities and rule of law on the part of some people.

“It is important that the outcome of this report is now followed up with further investigations through to their logical conclusion.

“This report further highlights the need for the agreement on a comprehensive set of arrangements to deal with past being finalised by the political parties and governments over the coming weeks.”
