Alliance meets with PSNI over interface tensions

The Alliance Party has met with local PSNI officers to discuss growing issues of concern around the interface area of East Belfast.

The meeting, led by Councillor Michelle Kelly and MLA designate Maire Hendron, was arranged following an increase in tensions in the area.

Michelle said: “It is essential we remain vigilant when it comes to increased tensions at any time, but especially over the coming weeks as the July 12th celebrations get underway.  This week we’ve already seen reports of unrest in the area, which the PSNI have recognised means they must act now, rather than allowing issues to escalate.”

MLA designate Maire Hendron added: “The PSNI has assured us that extra resources will be employed in the area over the coming weeks and were also able to outline on-going work with community groups and youth workers in the area aimed at alleviating tensions and addressing anti-social behaviour.

“We would urge anyone who is concerned or witnesses disorder to contact the PSNI as soon as possible.”
