Dr Stephen Farry stated: “These are only words from the UDA. People are entitled to be sceptical of yet more promises, but little delivery to date. The ever elastic timetable for decommissioning is to be further stretched to accommodate the continued procrastination. Even then, we only have an ‘expectation’ of decommissioning rather than firm guarantees.
“There was never any reason for any group to have and use weapons. The authorities must now respect the integrity of deadlines and treat the continued possession of weapons through the criminal law.”
