Alliance concern over Knockbracken Hospital issue

Alliance Health Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA has expressed concern at the way in which news of 25 mental health patients being discharged from Knockbracken Hospital emerged. He said that the issue should be dealt with using the utmost sensitivity.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: “An issue of this nature needs to be dealt with more sensitively than it appears to have been. We need to see full consultation between relatives and medical staff.

“Many of these patients require specialist assistance which they may not be able to receive if they are outside hospital. Clarity and answers are needed on this matter.

“Relatives may now be very unsure of what care arrangements are going to be put in place. This will have a very destabilising effect on the person involved as well as the wider family circle.

“Considering that Christmas is fast approaching, relatives and the individuals involved need clarity and assurance as regards arrangements.”
