Clarke – NI Electricity should consider compensation claims on a case by case basis

Alliance Down Councillor Patrick Clarke has said that NI Electricity should consider compensation claims by those who were left without electricity during the snow blizzards in March. NI Electricity has declared itself exempt due to exceptional weather, from paying out compensation to those left without electricity for 24 hours or more.

If you are without electricity for 24 hours then householders could receive £50 and businesses£125, then £25 for every 12 hour period after that.

Cllr Patrick Clarke said: “The rules do allow for NI Electricity to declare an exemption if there is exceptional weather. However, there are some cases from this snow blizzard that might merit compensation being paid.

“Instead of having a blanket ban on compensation being paid, I believe that NI Electricity should look at these claims on a case by case basis.

“Many people felt they were let down by the authorities during the severe weather, so NI Electricity should at least take the time to consider these claims instead of just ignoring them all.”
