Lunn says Orange Order must think again about action against Elliott and Kennedy

Lagan Valley Alliance MLA Trevor Lunn has said that the Orange Order must look at the message that is being sent out by the news that Tom Elliott and Danny Kennedy are to face disciplinary proceedings after they attended the funeral of police officer Ronan Kerr at a Catholic Church.

Trevor Lunn MLA said: “Tom Elliott and Danny Kennedy did the right thing. We are trying to build a shared future in Northern Ireland and it is vital that the organisation recognises the progress that has been made and must continue to be made in our society.

“The Orange Order needs to ask what type of message this sends out about the organisation.

“The Orange Order espouses civil and religious liberty but doesn’t extend that to letting their own members have a choice about attending Catholic services. There are massive questions that the organisation must answer about this issue and they must examine their rules.

“I have seen other members of the Orange Order attend funerals at Catholic Churches and I don’t think any of them faced any action.”
