A number of homes were evacuated during the alert overnight, with two suspicious objects uncovered. One of the objects was a hoax while the second was a viable device.
Councillor Billy Webb said: “I totally condemn this sickening attack against PSNI officers, who work hard to uphold the rule of law in the area.
“It is completely unacceptable that officers on a routine patrol found themselves a target. Not only were their lives put in danger, but the lives of the surrounding community were also put at risk by this callous act.
“We must be grateful no lives were lost and I must praise all involved in securing the device and in working with residents to evacuate the area.
“Those behind this incident do not speak for the community and I would appeal for anyone with information to contact the PSNI as soon as possible.”
