Webb condemns attack on Catholic Church

Alliance Councillor Billy Webb has said he is saddened that a local Catholic Church has once again been targeted by vandals.

St Mary’s Star of the Sea Church, on the Shore Road, was attacked with paint overnight on Saturday. The Church was previously targeted in September and has only in the past week been restored following that attack.

Councillor Billy Webb said: “It is extremely saddening when any place of worship is singled out by mindless thugs and attacked. I wholeheartedly condemn this terrible act.

“This is not the first time St Mary’s Star of the Sea has become a target and this on-going campaign is causing undue stress for the parish priest, the parishioners and those of all faiths in the surrounding area. I have been contacted by many in the community who say that those attacking the church are not doing it in their name.

“This type of behaviour must not be allowed to continue and I would urge anyone with information on those behind these attacks to come forward and contact the PSNI as soon as possible.

“Those responsible are not acting on behalf of the local community and must be taken off the streets and punished before the courts.”
