Tribal unity negative for Northern Ireland – Lunn

Lagan Valley Alliance MLA Trevor Lunn has said that tribal unity and tribal voting pacts have a negative impact because they divert debate away from real issues and focus on the tired arguments of the past. His comments come after Former DUP Leader Ian Paisley said he believed that the creation of a single unionist party is a non-runner.

Trevor Lunn MLA said: “It is very interesting that Ian Paisley has spoken out against creating a single unionist party. Tribal unity has a very negative impact as it moves political debate away from the big issues of the day like the economy and our public services onto tribal arguments. Elections should not be turned into a tribal headcount.

“Northern Ireland is facing very difficult decisions on the economy and on the public sector. Our politicians should be concentrating on these matters instead of the unionism-nationalism issue.

“People in Northern Ireland are deeply worried about jobs and about maintaining vital services in their area. Politicians must realise this and address everyday issues instead of focusing on the constitutional issue.”
