Thompson urges people to support remaining bus services

Holywood Alliance Councillor Larry Thompson has urged people to consider using the remaining bus services in their local area following Translink’s decision to axe Holywood town bus services.

Commenting on Translink’s recent decision, Cllr Thompson stated: “Whilst I recognise that Translink’s recent decision to axe Holywood’s town bus services was taken in the context of low passenger numbers and tough economic times, it provides yet more evidence of the lack of investment in public transport by the Department for Regional Development. The focus appears to be on roads and facilitating private car usage but I believe there should a rebalancing of transport funding to deliver more bus and rail services.”

“Following the loss of the Town Service, Holywood is now serviced by Ulsterbus services 1 & 2 which pass through the town whilst bringing passengers between Bangor and Belfast and a Metro bus service which links the town with Belfast City Centre and Holywood Exchange via the Old Holywood and Jackson’s Roads. The town also has a high frequency and quality rail service linking it with Bangor, Belfast and towns beyond. I would encourage people to consider giving the bus or train a go.”

“I understand that fares have been frozen for 2011 and a number of offers are available with significant savings available for those with a Smartlink card and one third off all return rail fares after 9.30am. Older people aged 60+ can also avail of free travel. I hope these offers will help entice people to give the bus a go and prove that public transport is the way to go.”
