There should be Irish Medium post-primary provision – Lunn

Alliance Education spokesperson, Trevor Lunn MLA, has said that there should be another Irish Medium post-primary school, to be located in the North West. He was speaking during a debate on the Education Minister’s approval for an Irish Medium post-primary school in Dungiven, in which the DUP called for the removal of the duties to encourage the growth of Irish Medium and Integrated education.

Trevor Lunn MLA said: “If we are providing a number of Irish Medium primary schools, then it is only right that children are allowed to continue their education in this sector at post-primary level. Parents considering Irish Medium education for their children need to know that the option of post-primary Irish Medium will be available.

“In Belfast, Colaiste Feirste has thrived over the years and proved its viability and I believe that the time is right to establish another similar school in a different location, in line with Executive policy to facilitate and encourage the growth of this sector.

“I am disappointed but not surprised by the DUP’s opposition to the commitments that the Education Department has to promote Integrated and Irish Medium education. There must not be any attempt to undermine these statutory duties.”
