Cllr Campbell, who represents the Antrim Line area on Newtownabbey Borough Council, said: “It would seem as if nothing is sacred for the mindless hooligans responsible for this appalling vandalism.
“For the families involved this has been deeply upsetting. I would urge anyone who saw anything suspicious at the cemetery on Sunday to report it to the Police. Significantly, this outrage occurred during daylight hours and, as Sunday is a day that people could be expected to be in the cemetry tending graves, it may be that someone witnessed those involved or may be able to give useful information which could lead to arrests.
“It would seem as if these acts of vandalism were not motivated by sectarian considerations. Whatever led to it those involved need to be dealt with by the full force of the law. Only lengthy custodial sentences will reflect the outrage rightly felt about this crime”
