Report from NICCY supports call for independent review of SEN provision – Lyttle

Alliance Education spokesperson Chris Lyttle MLA has welcomed a new report from NICCY into Special Education Needs (SEN) provision in schools.

Alliance MLA Chris Lyttle said: “I thank the Children’s Commissioner and team for the extensive work undertaken on this comprehensive investigation of Special Educational Needs provision, which further establishes that the rights of children with SEN are not being upheld.

“The report finds that schools are lacking the funding, resource, time and capacity to implement individualised early intervention support and an education system under extreme pressure, unable to respond to the scale and complexity of need causing developmental delay for children and frustration for parents and professionals doing their best in these unacceptable circumstances.

“The audit of the Education Authority special educational needs provision identified systemic failure which demands independent review. I welcome the support of the NICCY report for such independent review and I commit to working with the Children’s Commissioner to ensure the implementation of all recommendations necessary to deliver the standard of special educational needs provision to which our children are entitled and deserve.”
