Alliance Health spokesperson Paula Bradshaw MLA has called for confirmation guidance from the Joint Committee on Vaccines and Immunisation (JCVI) that adults living with immunosuppressed adults should be prioritised for a COVID-19 vaccine will be followed in Northern Ireland.

The organisation has advised the UK Government to prioritise vaccinations for adults living with people with weakened immune systems, such as those with blood cancer, HIV or who are receiving treatment including chemotherapy, as evidence shows the latter may not respond as well to the COVID vaccine.

“Adults who are immunosuppressed may in some cases be uncertain about the safety of the vaccine and therefore it is right people living with them should be vaccinated to minimise the household risk,” said South Belfast MLA Ms Bradshaw.

“It is noteworthy the JCVI has reached this conclusion and its advice is prioritisation should be given to those living with adults who are immunosuppressed.

“We have been told throughout Northern Ireland is rigidly following the JCVI advice, and I would seek clarification it will continue to do so in this case.”
