Post Office benefits boost points to future for local services

Alliance Chief Whip Kieran McCarthy MLA has welcomed news that the Minister for Work and Pensions, James Purnell, has renewed the Post Office’s card account contract which distributes benefits. He said that local Minsters should follow Mr Purnell’s lead and look to working more closely with Post Offices to maintain and develop the links between government agencies and local businesses.

The Strangford MLA said: “I strongly welcome this decision from James Purnell. It’s good news for those who have existing accounts and will provide them with much reassurance. It will also provide income to sub-Post Offices and underpin their viability.

“I also note the recent call from Lord Mandelson on adding functions to Post Offices in light of the banking crisis. The good reputation of the Post Office can play a role in reassuring the public during these difficult financial times.

“I hope that Northern Ireland Ministers will participate in this drive, so that we can maintain the valuable partnership between government agencies and local businesses.”
