Antrim Councillor Alan Lawther said: “What better time than Recycle Week is there to continue the push for the introduction of a plastic bag levy? All that can be done must be done to encourage the re-use of plastic bags to help reduce litter and reduce the impact on our environment.
“I would like the Environment Minister to act to place a levy on plastic bags. Much money has been generated in the Republic of Ireland for environmental projects due to such a levy and I would like to see Northern Ireland being pro-active on this too.
“I also want to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to make every effort to recycle waste. The more we recycle, the less that goes into landfill, and that could help reduce households’ rates bills.”
