The alert – which has now been declared an elaborate hoax – began shortly before 2am on Sunday morning, when the device was discovered at the rear of a house in the area.
Councillor Gavin Norris said: “I totally condemn the actions of those who have yet again caused disruption to residents living in the Broadlands Gardens area.
“It is completely unacceptable that two families were forced from their homes in the middle of the night due to the disgraceful and menacing behavior of those behind this hoax device.
“Concern is growing as Broadlands Gardens continues to be singled out and I would urge anyone with any information to contact the PSNI as soon as possible.
“Residents just want to get on with their lives in peace.”
