No need for delay on cross-border travel for elderly people

Alliance Strangford Assembly member Kieran McCarthy has said there is no need for consultation on free cross-border public transport for elderly people — the move should be implemented immediately.

The Ards Alderman stated: “I do not know why the Minister is engaging in consultation on whether free travel for elderly people should be extended in this way. The answer is obvious — yes!

“I would go further and say that the suggestion that women should qualify at 60 should be equalized for men. Whichever way they choose to do it, the age at which men and women qualify should be the same.

“We must now consider what other measures we can take to make public transport a more viable option for more people across the island of Ireland, including encouraging tourism in Northern Ireland from the Republic.”
