Nicholl welcomes consultation on holiday resort plans

Alliance Councillor Kate Nicholl has welcomed moves towards Belfast City Centre being re-designated as a holiday resort, as a planned consultation on the issue was approved.

Aiming to increase the opening hours of many shops and services on 18 Sundays throughout the year, the Alliance Councillor for Balmoral said the incentive was about offering ‘full choice’ to the many tourists who visit the City each year.

She added: “Belfast is a fantastic City and one that I’m proud to see grow on the global stage. Yet with this growth in tourism comes a responsibility to ensure we offer the best experience possible and I have lost count of the many times I’ve witnessed groups of frustrated tourists wondering why our shops remain closed on Sunday mornings.

“While I recognise this might cause concern for some in the retail industry, they can be assured that we are only talking about 18 Sundays out of the year and that their rights will be upheld throughout this process.

“I’m delighted this issue will now be open for full public debate, giving everyone the chance to find out more and express their views on how we can best develop Belfast further.”
