Alliance Finance spokesperson Andrew Muir MLA has expressed concern following an announcement from Ulster Bank it is to close its operations in the Republic of Ireland.
Ulster Bank’s business in Northern Ireland will continue to trade but jobs may be at risk. Mr Muir said it was a real blow.
“The decision to withdraw from the Republic of Ireland market will raise many concerns about jobs at risk and impact upon consumers,” he said.
“Whilst we are told they intend to remain in Northern Ireland there will be legitimate apprehension about the long term future.
“I have requested a meeting with Financial Services Union representatives and Ulster Bank management to discuss these worrying developments, and will be urging Ulster Bank to retain jobs in Belfast and beyond. As we endure such a serious economic downturn, they are desperately needed.”
