McCarthy: Trust’s decision to move home help services is worrying

Alliance Health spokesperson Kieran McCarthy has voiced his concerns over suggestions today that the Southern Health Trust is to hand over its home help services to the private sector.

The news was made public this morning by the public service union NIPSA.

Kieran McCarthy said: “This news is very concerning. The sector is already under pressure and while the trust has said no jobs will be lost, this will be a worry for all involved.

“Transforming your care is supposed to deliver a better and more efficient service. Yet all I constantly see is that plan failing to deliver, as the trusts seem to move further away from implementing the main document.

“This is only the start of what I suspect will be a long process. Despite assurances from both the Minister and John Compton (Chief Executive of the Health and Social Care Board) at a recent Health Committee meeting that the right funding is available to complete Transforming You Care, my suspicions over the process remain.

“Essentially this is about the care our elderly population receive and we must ensure this continues to the highest standard. The Alliance Party will continue to fight any attempt to privatise the Health Service and I will continue to monitor this situation.”
