Mr McCarthy was speaking following Simon Hamilton’s statement the ban should be lifted if a Westminster Government advisory group says it is safe.
“Alliance has led the way in promoting the rights of everyone in our society, including the LGBT community. As part of that, we have continuously fought against the ridiculous ban on gay men donating blood.
“I am delighted to see the Health Minister making this statement, which is another major step towards full equality. It also throws major scorn on Mr Hamilton’s predecessor Edwin Poots, who had a judge describe his decision to keep the ban as irrational.
“Any right-thinking person can see the blood ban for what it is – an absurd judgement based on the DUP’s personal prejudices rather than available evidence. The sooner it is removed, the better.”
