McCarthy says any Sinn Fein threat to devolution would be disgraceful

Following speculation in the media that Sinn Fein may not re-nominate a Deputy First Minister this Thursday, Alliance Chief Whip Kieran McCarthy MLA said that such a move would be totally disgraceful. Peter Robinson is due to be nominated First Minister and for this to happen, Sinn Fein must renominate too.

Kieran McCarthy MLA stated: “Disgraceful threats like this damage the credibility of Sinn Fein and damage the credibility of the Executive.

“Being in government means being responsible. It’s time Sinn Fein took this role seriously instead of engaging in sham-fighting and making veiled threats against devolution.

“Walking away from devolution would be a crime against local democracy. The reaction this speculation has garnered has already been deeply embarrassing for Sinn Fein and has called into question their judgement. They need to take heed of public opinion.

“Sinn Fein is taking the public for fools. This is a very dangerous move and they need to stop playing games and stop de-stabilising devolution.”
